Copper is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent effective against a range of pathogens threatening public health today, whether they are foodborne, airborne, waterborne or transmitted by touch.  Recent science shows that copper has an intrinsic ability to rapidly inactivate dangerous foodborne pathogens (including E. coli O157:H7, Campylobacter jejuni, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enteritidis) at both refrigerated and room temperature.  Copper and copper alloys could therefore help to reduce the incidence of cross-contamination in food processing facilities.

Il y a maintenant des preuves scientifiques substantielles qui soutiennent le remplacement d'équipements et accessoires fréquemment touchés dans un environnement clinique par ceux contenant du cuivre. Cela réduit le risque d'infections. L'essai clinique avec le cuivre, mené dans un service médical au Selly Oak Hospital, a démontré une réduction de 90 à 100 % de la contamination sur les surfaces contenant du cuivre comparé aux matières normalement utilisées. L'expérience test de l'aménagement de services avec une gamme complète de produits contenant du cuivre a apporté une contribution majeure à la compréhension scientifique de l'application pratique (Présenté à IHEEM Conférence de 2009, Harrogate).

The benefits of using all-copper coils are already well known in the HVACR industry. Copper, as well as many copper alloys, have remarkable intrinsic antimicrobial properties. This phenomenon has implications not only for touch surfaces but also for HVAC components. Copper HVAC components suppress the growth of bacteria, mould and mildew that reduce system efficiency and cause product deterioration or foul odours.  Compared to coils made with aluminum fins, coils made with copper fins and copper tubes stay cleaner longer, operate more efficiently and are more resistant to corrosion.

Copper and its alloys offer a suite of materials for designers of functional, sustainable and cost-effective products.

Copper and certain copper alloys have intrinsic antimicrobial properties (so-called ‘Antimicrobial Copper’) and products made from these materials have an additional, secondary benefit of contributing to hygienic design. Products made from Antimicrobial Copper are a supplement to, not a substitute for standard infection control practices. It is essential that current hygiene practices are continued, including those related to the cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces.
